The articles I have written hope to clarify the mirky task of job search. It is a unique task for many reasons. Not only must job seekers fight their natural modesty and aversion to rejection, but the lore is full of myths which assume broad uniformity of the adversaries.

  • The difference between a fairly good job, and a very good job is enormous to the individual both financially and in quality of work life.
  • Similarly, a good employee is between 50% to 250% more productive than a poor employee.

  • Employee selection procedures are invalid. The research is clear and consistent. You just can't pick 'em. Not from a resume, referral, or interview.*

  • Employers don't really know what they should be looking for. The actually relevant factors are unknown.

  • They can't recognize a good candidate when they see one. Real evaluation is not done.

Everyone just makes it up and trusts their gut. Superstition reigns. It is all one big Rorschak test. It doesn't make sense because this is nothing real there.

That is why the job search process is bizzare.
The results are very important and the procedure is quite meaningless.

* My favorite expert on this now is Dr. Wendell Williams of
Scientific Selection.
