More Snappy Retorts to the Salary QuestionBy Gary Ames |

Blow Right By. I just want to paid appropriately. I don’t really have expertise in the salary ranges for the various positions in the different companies in all the regions I’m interesting in. As the expert here, I’d have to rely on you for the compensation ranges. I consider it a matter of personal integrity to maintain confidentiality regarding salary. My past earnings were good; I’ve always been well paid because I’ve always contributed at very high levels. But my numbers are personal and confidential and always have been. No, I don’t want to price myself for you. It is your job to evaluate my value to the company and make an attractive and fair offer. Would you want to disclose salary if you were in my position? You are the employment professional here. I just want to do challenging work for good company. I’m not looking for a killing, nor do I want to be underpaid. If you are asking me how much money, I want, you would have a hard time paying me too much. If you’re asking me what’s the least I would accept, I don’t think I want to talk about that, would you? We can work it out. If I’m the right person, and this is the right job, then I’m sure we’ll have a match. My criteria. I have been paid, and now the want the fair market price for my level of skills. I’ve gotten my greatest satisfaction from the work I do every day, more than the paycheck I get every other week. So let’s talk about…. I want to take into consideration, the challenge, geography, environment, growth potential, and compensation. Compensation is just one factor. Let’s talk about…. Question with a Question. I don’t want to waste your time or mine. Why don’t you tell me the range that you have, and I’ll tell you if we should continue talking or not. I always have and want to continue to work with industry leaders. They offer the most challenging work and pay the best too. What is the pay for this position? If you must. What I’m looking for is a professional position on par with industry standards in the area. My research says this about $XX-XXX,000. What does your research say? |
