Your list of firms in the various databases have been selected for you because they met all of the multiple criteria used in our request.  These parameters include:  type of industry, size of company, and geography.

The recruiter list is good to go as is. No processing required. You can pick some to recruiters call just in order to get used to selling. This is a good safe time to practice the lines of your message. The phone only shoots blanks, continue calling until it stops feeling like live fire. See Calling Executive Recruiters.

Take an overview of the companies we have ordered and the contacts within the organization. It usually makes sense to initially blizt the list with a capsule bio letter with a resume. If it is cheap and easy for you and has a chance of being effective, great. I like FaxBlasting for these virtues and because it is the rarest of techniques.

All that is required to get started is to Erase your current employer and the few contacts dangerous to your current employment. Otherwise, you never know. Missed opportunities are expensive. Notice your preferences, but exclude firms sparingly. Use your preferences to help form the next data request.

After the shotgun comes the rifle. Categorize the organizations on your list thinking of target selection for a more intense, specialized, or researched approach.

Rate all the companies for four different levels of intensities of approach.  Determine which companies to include the various categories for how best to target them.  Milk the data!  Discard sparingly, if at all.  Are you certain that listing is useless?

Notice the commonalties among the companies you choose as your favorites.  Are you prioritizing by size, location or are you excluding all companies in certain industries.  Use this information to refine your goal statement and select a favorite employers list for networking.  Either print them all out and mark into these categories with a pen, or electronically move records to 3-4 separate files of varying interest.

A -     Ace.  Ideal employer.  Feel free to use !! or + +.  Get further research to find connection with best target contacts in firm.  What business proposal could you make to produce Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action?  Persist, be tenacious, get through to a conversation and meeting.

B -     Best.  Get best name, send letter only first, call, send resume, call.  Call until you get through with your message.

C -     Callable.  Strong interest and deserving of extra effort.  Call to get the best contact name and call again, at least leaving your message on voicemail.

D –     Decent.  Indicates that there is some interest in the company, and they should get some attention such as just cover letter and resume.

E -     Erase.  Indicates that you see negative value, want nothing sent to anyone at this company. Definitely will never take action.  Delete from electronic list.

Please note for each firm, which person and title listed should receive your marketing letter.  The various databases contain different amounts of detail.  The rule is to target one or two levels above where you would enter that organization, while avoiding someone who screens a lot of mail (rarely possible to do both).  When in doubt, lean toward your functional area or go to the top.  For favorite targets call and verify the addressee.

Be vigilant for someone you know who works at the company. Anyone you have a connection with or have had some business dealings with is an angle that can be used to your advantage. Perhaps one of the officers went to your same college. How to use the connection is a strategic question. For now, just capture the link.

When in doubt, be inclusive not exclusive, because we want to generate as many options as possible.
